But those who trust in the Lord will find new strength. They will soar high on wings like eagles. They will run and not grow weary. They will walk and not faint. -Isaiah 40:31
I have always loved watching birds soar through the air. It could be any kind of bird too, from the elegant eagle to the plump pigeon, I like them all. There’s just something calming about seeing them do what comes most natural to them, something that I would never be able to do. To fly high up in the sky with just a few flaps of the wings, catching a gust of air and being lifted even higher. Swooping and dipping down with such freedom as if they had not a care in the world.
Since I can’t personally ask them about their specific mission when they fly, I just have to imagine. The birds may always have a purpose in mind when taking flight, but I like to think that sometimes they fly just to fly, because they feel the rush of freedom. As if they aren’t always in search of food or shelter; they are just living in the freedom they have been given from their Creator. They aren’t afraid of falling to the ground below or even the storms that brew in the distance. They just trust their wings to take them where they need to go.
Unlike the birds though, we may not get to experience this wind on our face kind of freedom, but we get something else, we get to place our trust in God and not just our own “wings”. As we continue to focus on the Lord and on growing our relationship with Him, He strengthens us from the inside out and begins to give us a freedom like the birds. Yes, the storms may still come in our lives, but the Lord strengthens us through those storms. If our eyes are fixed on the dark clouds that loom overhead, fears and unease settle in. But if we lock eyes with Jesus and keep our focus on Him through it all, we can find a new strength to soar; to not grow weary or faint. We can press on with the confident hope of the One right beside us giving us those gusts of wind in our wings right when we need it most to continue to launch us higher in our own freedom. That is if we just trust Him. We don’t have to go it alone; we don’t have to rely only on our own abilities to get us through the struggles in life. We get God.
