Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today, and forever. – Hebrews 13:8 NLT
People change, friendships change, marriages change, jobs change, our health changes, the weather changes, the world changes, heck even our hair color changes. I don’t know about you but I have never been a big fan of change. I get set in my ways and get comfortable with the status quo, even if it really isn’t all that great to begin with. But I’m used to it, so it is what it is. When the inevitable deviations come up, I tend to dig in my heels and resist with all that I have inside me, because it never feels comfortable. But unfortunately for me, the change ends up happening anyway. No matter how hard I try, the ups and downs come and I only end up making myself miserable fighting it before eventually giving in.
Knowing that growth and adjustments aren’t always that pleasant, isn’t it wonderful that we have Jesus, who never changes? When everything around us can feel like it’s seemingly different from week to week, we get to have Jesus who will always be the same.
His goodness, and kindness, and gentleness will never falter.
His promises, and help, and love will never go away.
His desire to be with us and His delight in every aspect of our lives never slip away.
His protection and provision for our futures with Him never deviates.
He is with us, He will never leave us, He will guide us, and He will love us. And none of that will ever change.
Just knowing this fact, that we can cling to the One who is the same yesterday, today, and forever when all the world around us is different, is such a comfort and a blessing. But we will only truly experience this blessing if we actually cling to Him.
If we don’t know God deeply, we will never experience the fact that He doesn’t change. Think about it this way, if we are constantly around someone, we get to know them pretty well. We know what they like and what they don’t. We learn the little details about them so when something is different, we will instantly know it. But we have to be pretty close to that person to be able to know when a modification has been made. Our relationship with God is just the same way. If we get close with Jesus and keep our eyes on Him, He will be able to show us that He doesn’t change. He is that constant in our lives that we can always count on. He won’t decide one day to pivot, to walk out or to quit. He has said that He will be with us and that will never waver.
So, when our lives seem to be filled with uncertainties, lock eyes with the One who never differs and let him be the steady rock you cling and His Word the haven you seek when the changes come rolling in.
