So now we can rejoice in our wonderful new relationship with God because our Lord Jesus Christ has made us friends of God. -Romans 5:11 NLT
Friends with God. Close your eyes and just think about the great blessing of that for a moment. God spoke and there was light, He breathes life into everything that has ever lived, He calms the unforgiving seas, and when He simply speaks all creation jumps. With all of that wonder and awe in mind, because of what Jesus did, we get to be His friend. I don’t know about you but this renders me speechless and simultaneously brings tears to my eyes.
Friendship is closeness, friendship is communication, friendship is helping, and friendship is companionship. We get to have all of that plus salvation and unending love with God. This is one of those truths that just causes my head to shake at the sheer immensity of it.
When we are lonely, He is there; when we are scared, He will protect us; when we are anxious, He will calm us; when we are sad, He will comfort us; and when we need Him, He will say the words “I am with you.” He is the best relationship you will ever form and the best friend you will ever have. You can call on Him any time of day or night and He will answer. He will never leave you, forget you or forsake you. He will defend you and take care of you. “So now we can rejoice”, we have a wonderful relationship with God to lean on. But the key is to lean, not to try and stand up straight on our own under our own strength, but to lean on Him and His friendship. He is there and He won’t let you fall. I can’t imagine any other place I would rather be than friends with God.
